NETIQUETTE"Etiquette" - the forms of behavior required by good breeding orprescribed by authority in social or official life.BACKGROUNDIF YOU FIND YOURSELF IN ROME, FIND OUT WHATTHE ROMANS DO!Along with an Internet vernacular, a form of "Net etiquette," oftenreferred to as "netiquette" or informal rules of communicationsengagement, developed as well.Breach of these rules invites one to be "flamed." A flame isbasically a reactionary, violent verbal expression of disapproval to one'scommunication with another. A "flame-fest" occurs when people startflaming each other as retribution for being flamed earlier.Keep in mind the Net allows people to fully express to relatively largegroups of people at a time without revealing true identity (if so desired). Thisinvites "the lions" buried deep within the chests of all the"Wilbur Milktoasts" out in Net Land to really lunge out and roar!Netiquette varies from one part of Cyberspace to the next. Preferred conductin IRC might be rude in a mailing list, so pay attention to where you are.Lurk a bit and read the local rules, find out who is around now and who wasthere before you and what the topic is before you jump in. If you don't like theplace, move on. If you stay, read the FAQ  to avoid asking stupid andfrequently repeated questions. Don't make everyone read something intended foronly one person.Express yourself clearly and succinctly. Check your spelling, grammar, clarity and content-correctness. Don't give in to the temptation to tell someoneoff for not doing the same, and if you do, apologize. Here are some basic rules you can follow that will keep you avoid the singeof the flame: THINK BEFORE YOU SEND: always KNOW what you are writting. First, foremost and worth repeating often--DON'T TYPE it if you don't want to see it in print, posted on a bulletin board, in a newsletter or in front of a jury, because you will never know "who else" will be reading your e-mail. DON'T send unsolicited mass e-mail. This is often referred to as "spamming" and could irreparably "harm your reputation" and that of your company's (organization's) in the eyes of the Internet community. (And when there is enough complaint against you, your ISP- the Internet Service Provider will probably drop you from membership! ). DON'T USE ALL CAPS! It's harder to read and makes the reader think you are "shouting." AVOID using inflammatory language &/or punctuation. Avoid redundancy in your e-mail replies. When responding to e-mail, please try to keep excerpts and quotations short. They should be only long enough to give the reader a clear idea about what you are responding to. (And especially those of you who subscribe to e-mail ListServ, please do not quote all excerpts and quotations-this can often be considered as being ignorant & rude). Use the same common courtesy that you would extend (and expect to receive) in any other form of communication, including verbal. If you are flamed, please do not invite a "flame-fest" by flaming back (though it can be difficult sometimes... especially when your feelings are truly hurt).GIVE BACK TO THE NET Offer answers and help if you are in a position to do so. If you've asked a question and have gotten several responses, summarize them and make the summary available so that others might learn. Behave responsibly with any power you accumulate. Forgive the transgressions of others. Everyone makes mistakes. Give people the benefit of the doubt, and if you must point out the error of their ways, do so with humility.By Indo forum USA
