Answer:
A VPN is what you need for troublefree operation and peace of mind. Start with the online help in W2K. Especially the Concepts section. The resource kit books are all online at the Microsoft web site also. You will need to setup an RRAS box with one interface that has access to the Internet.

OWA (Outlook Web Access) is a good idea. Be aware that setting up OWA to work securely is a can of worms. If your clients are all using computers setup by you then it can be OK (No "home" computers or connections from public Internet kiosks).

Also the OWA box should be behind a firewall, preferably reverse-proxied so the OWA box public interface cannot be directly contacted from the Internet. None of this is easy, unless you don't care about security at all, then it's easy.
